Beacon Hill
Federal and Greek Revival row houses along Chestnut, Mount Vernon and Pinckney, most of them long since divided into flats. Kitchens sit in garden levels or rear ells reached by a narrow stair, so a built-in column often has to come apart before it can move.
What Beacon Hill throws at a service call
A range on the Hill is nearly always a delivery problem before it is a repair problem. Kitchens sit in garden levels and rear ells, the stair turns twice, and door openings were framed a century before anybody sold a 48-inch range. Gas is the other constant: shared risers and long runs mean manifold pressure here is measured as a matter of course, because a burner that looks faulty is often a supply that sags the moment three appliances draw at once.

The fan ran at one speed whichever setting I chose. Speed control board had failed closed. New board, and low is quiet enough to talk over now.

Convection roast was browning one side of the tray and leaving the other pale. The convection motor was running slow on a tired capacitor. New motor, and the difference was obvious that night.

The baffle filters kept dropping out of their track. The track had bowed and one clip was missing entirely. He straightened it, fitted the right clips and cleaned years of grease off the canopy.
